A deeply unsettling video is flooding our news feeds today — but thankfully, it has a happy ending.
In it, 2-year-old Bodie Shoff of Orem, Utah, is seen saving his twin brother, Brock, after he had become trapped under a fallen dresser.
As told to KUTV, Bodie and Brock were playing in their room Thursday morning when the rambunctious duo decided to climb their dresser. The dresser subsequently fell on Brock, trapping him underneath.
The video, released by the twins’ mother, Kayli Shoff, captures Bodie working to rescue his brother. He can be seen first walking around the piece of furniture, seeming to assess the situation for a possible solution.
Bodie then tries to pull the dresser, to no avail, before finally pushing it forward enough for Brock to roll out.
Occupied in another room, Kayli and her husband, Ricky, did not hear the dresser fall and only found out about the incident after looking through footage on the video camera in the boys’ bedroom.
“My heart sank,” Kayli told KUTV of the moment she watched the footage. “I didn’t know what to do. I felt like the worst mom in the world.”
While Kayli and her husband initially hesitated to share the video online, they believed it was a powerful way to raise awareness about the dangers of unsecured furniture. The YouTube video, published on Saturday, December 31, has been viewed 674K times.
Kayli and Ricky Shoff have since bolted the dresser to the wall, and even took the knobs off of the drawers, so the twins won’t be able to climb it.
“I think physically, you can’t child proof your house 100 percent,” said Kayli. However, she recognizes that bolting her furniture was a necessary next step: “I can do this one thing to make my home a little bit more safe for my children.”
Bodie and Brock are both doing fine and have returned to their normal selves, Kayli told KUTV.
