This 40-Second Video Can Help You Save Your Child from Choking

If you saw a baby choking, would you know what to do? According to St. John Ambulance, a London-based first-aid charity whose aim is to teach “simple, life-saving skills,” 40% of the parents they asked had witnessed their child choking. And of those parents? Four-fifths of them did not know what to do. Four-fifths. That’s a startling, if not altogether surprising, statistic.

Thankfully, they have put out a 40-second animated video to show us exactly what to do, with the help of a handful of animated toys voiced by British actors. Our favorite? The despondent gummy bear (voiced by Johnny Vegas) who says, “I’m a baby that chokes babies! Such a tragic irony!” It’s really not funny. It’s really not. Except we can’t stop watching and yes, laughing.

Which is exactly the point. Because while some might not think that a humorous video that’s less than a minute long could be the thing that saves a child’s life … we disagree. Thanks to that gummy bear and his friends, we are now prepared to handle a life-threatening situation — and we could not say that 40 seconds ago.

Meet #TheChokeables in the video above and learn what to do in the event your child swallows a small object. It might just save their life.
